Disney’s new online service, Disney+, launches with arguably the most robust film library in streaming’s very recent history. With movies dating back to the 1930s, viewers are excused if feeling like picking something to watch is less fun and fancy free, and more overwhelming and confusing. That’s where Rotten Tomatoes comes in. We may not have existed yet when Snow White, Pinocchio, or even The Great Muppet Caper came out (but we were definitely there for Doug’s 1st Movie), but using our time-tested Tomatometer, which covers well over a century of cinema, we took a navigated flight through Disney+’s nearly 500 launch offerings, picking out the best movies on Disney+ to watch now.
Looking for classic Disney animated movies? Disney+ has them, and we’ve chosen the Freshest, like Cinderella, Fantasia, 101 Dalmatians, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast. For more recent Disney animated movies, the best among that crop includes Zootopia, Moana, and Frozen. Of course, you can’t talk Disney animation these days without including Pixar, who are represented in Certified Fresh full with Toy Story, Inside Out, The Incredibles, and more.
But Walt Disney Studios also has a long, honored tradition of family-friendly live-action films, too, and the streaming service does not skimp out. Here, you’ll find those delightful animation/live-action hybrids (Mary Poppins, Pete’s Dragon), sports classics (The Rookie, Miracle, Remember the Titans), and some sweet sci-fi (TRON, Flight of the Navigator).
If you’re looking to get lost in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney+ is launching a few films short of a full Avengers line-up: Expect to see Guardians of the Galaxy and Iron Man and a several more, and expect us to update the list as more are added in the future. And, of course, Star Wars is here in full force: From A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, to the modern era featuring The Force Awakens and spin-offs like Rogue One. Our only stipulation for inclusion in our guide is that each film had to have at least 20 reviews, ensuring that we’re presenting the greatest movies available on the platform that have hit a minimum requirement of critical buzz and exposure.
As streaming continues to shake up the entertainment landscape, threatening to bury audiences under a deluge of viewing choices, we present a fast track into what you want to see with the 150 Best Movies on Disney+ to Watch Right Now!
